This article examines the relationship between democracy and political constitutionalism, beginning with its historical (section 1) and theoretical (section 2) roots. Reconstructing the foundations of political constitutionalism is vital to exposing its misuse in contexts marked by authoritarian populism (section 3). However, the relationship with the egalitarian elements of left-wing populism opens a door to developments of the paradigm and, more precisely, to the possibility of envisioning its institutional evolution in a way that is more coherent with its foundational premises (section 4). From this perspective, the article will demonstrate the points of contact between political constitutionalism and Ely-inspired theories of the political process/representation-reinforcing theory.
