Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906-2021) was not only the President of Senegal for twenty years, but also a poet, a humanist and a federalist who contributed with his political-cultural commitment to the transition from colonial Africa to modern Africa. In this essay, some crucial aspects of his thought and activity are considered in the following chapters: négritude and francophonie; Eurafrica; independence, federalism and African unity; the history and civilization of the universal. His life and his political thought are still relevant to understanding the difficulties that the African Union must overcome in order to dialogue on an equal footing with other continents and with the great powers in the United Nations.
