L’articolo si propone di illustrare le principali innovazioni introdotte nella nuova edizione del Manuale Diagnostico Psicodinamico (PDM-3), con un focus specifico sull’approccio diagnostico-valutativo in età adulta. Nello specifico, a seguito di una panoramica sulla storia, sulla struttura e sui principali contenuti del manuale, verranno descritti i principi chiave della valutazione dei livelli di organizzazione di personalità e degli stili o disturbi di personalità (Asse P), con un approfondimento delle personalità masochistiche (autofrustranti). Segue una disamina della valutazione del profilo del funzionamento mentale (Asse M), con una particolare attenzione ai domini delle esperienze e rappresentazioni corporee, inserite in questa edizione, e della capacità di esplorare la propria vita interiore. Vengono poi analizzati i pattern sintomatologici e l’esperienza soggettiva dei sintomi (Asse S), prendendo come esempio le innovazioni introdotte rispetto ai disturbi della nutrizione e dell’alimentazione. Infine, verrà descritta l’esperienza soggettiva di fenomeni di rilevanza collettiva, come il cambiamento climatico, le guerre e le pandemie, inclusa nella nuova sezione dedicata alle “esperienze psicologiche che possono richiedere attenzione clinica”.
